We found quite a lot of fungi on the unimproved grassland this afternoon. Most of it was in tatters, looking past it’s best but we did find two interesting specimens. We didn’t have a lot of time to search for more and we’re not really into fungi identification…are these some sort of Waxcap ?

These look to be Scarlet Waxcaps – Hygrocybe coccinea.
They are a good indicator of a good fungal diversity.
I am interested to know of any sites within Calderdale.
Where is Hunter Hill?
Many thanks Steve. The fields are mid way between Mixenden Reservoir and the lower end of Ogden golf course. A farm track leads on to the fields from the north end of the reservoir towards Ogden golf course.
Alternative – Calderdale Way heads down a track from Cold Edge Road passing the quarry on the right. Go right to the bottom of the steep hill to a farm track and turn left along a very muddy track and then its the fields on the hillside to the left. These fungi we found at SE40589 429786.
Will have another look in the next few days if we get chance. See what else we can find.. Fields are steep in places usually just grazed by sheep, occasionally cattle.
Hi David, I can see where it is on the map. I have been that way once to look at the old quarry for interesting plants. The grid ref takes me to Wetherby for some reason. Do let me know of anything interesting. The season is drawing to a close now but it could be a good area to look at next year.
