The black top of the Stinkhorn is its covering of sticky spores. The overpowering gas-like smell of this fungus attracts many flies – mostly bluebottle types – which will take every bit of the black away, spreading the fungus spores around, and leaving it white like another of Alison's pictures of Stinkhorn, Phallus impudicus, she posted recently.
